Sialkot is one of the leading exporting cities of Pakistan. The main exports are Leather, Leather products, Sports goods and surgical instruments etc. This area has been involved in the Tanning from centuries. Earlier, it was concentrating on low quality Leather Products on small scale. With the passage of time diversification started which resulted in the high quality value added Leather products with modern touch. Leather industry and Tanning progressed very rapidly in the recent years. As per survey conducted by CPC presently there are about 250 tanneries of different sizes are in function in this area.

With the change of time, priorities and trends also change. Same case can be applied on the Leather industry. It is therefore become the urgent requirement to work for adoption of modern technology for the production of sophisticated value added Leather products.

In order to support the diversification drive a Leather Products Development Institute (LPDI) has been established. The aims of the institute are to produce trained manpower for Leather industry. So as to enhance the productivity and improve the quality of the products to meet the International Standards. To meet the objectives, the institute has been equipped with latest equipment, machinery and innovations of modern Technology.

The institute is situated on Main Defence Road, Allama Iqbal Town Sialkot between

Roras Road and China Chowk (Sublime Chowk) near the WAPDA colony. The location is well connected with the city transport. Guideline

The institute is housed in its own building, that covers more then 3000 Sqft against the total area of more then 55000 Sqft. The building is the symbol of new magnificent architecture and innovations.

The Leather Products Development Institute (LPDI) has developed a comprehensive training criteria and modules. The target is to equip the students with the requirement that they can meet the challenges in industry easily. Its aim is to enhance knowledge and develop skills of the students so that they could perform their jobs and assignments properly, timely and professionally. The institute is going to provide the following skills and facilities to the students, researchers, leather industry owners, managers and workers.

1: To provide Technical assistance in training of:
      1. Leather Gloves Manufacturing Technology
      2. Leather Garments Manufacturing Technology
      3. Leather Goods Manufacturing Technology
      4. Conducting Short Course in Footwear Technology
        a. Cutting Department
        b. Stitching Department
        c. Lasting by Hand
        d. Finishing Department 
     5: Refresher Course for Managers/Supervisors in Gloves
        Manufacturing/Designing/ Pattern using.
     6: Refresher Course for Managers/ Supervisors in Garments
        Manufacturing/Designing.
2: To provide Advisory services to up-grade the technology in Leather manufacturing for Gloves, Garments, Footwear and extending Leather Goods.
3: To provide the facility of Quality Control Laboratory for quality assessment and characteristics of materials, chemicals and components before their use in production.
4: To keep the Stock of the standard materials by buying the bulk quantities at low prices and to sell it at reasonable prices to Institute members.
5: To render Facility Services to the Small Units on subsidized rates as determined from time to time by the Institute Committee.
6: To conduct Seminars, Workshops and Exhibitions on modern material and components used in the manufacturing of Leather products.
